The sweet moment of circling chairs at the Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness as a research instructor for IGROOVE: A Dance and Music Study for Older Adults with Memory Concerns. This NIH funded clinical study will help researchers to determine what kinds of dance, the frequency of the dance classes, and what aspects of the dance class – music, social interaction, cognitive challenge – affect fitness, memory and brain health. Much gratitude to all the team and co-leads Christina E. Hugenschmidt, Ph.D., associate professor of gerontology, and geriatric medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Christina T. Soriano, M.F.A., dance professor and vice provost of the arts and interdisciplinary initiatives at Wake Forest University.

I’m looking forward to collaborating again with Gene Felice’s Coaction Lab for the 1708 InLight 2022 exhibition in Richmond, VA. We will be revisiting our explorations of a floating, projection performance space to be installed on Youngs Pond in Bryan Park, near the dam by Hermitage Road. With input from the Riverine Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists, we will include imagery and sounds of the park’s native flora and fauna. This will also include a look into the microorganisms and algae that live in Youngs Pond and the effects of human development and climate change on the organisms that live with and depend upon us.  Gene is bringing his Coaction Lab which is equipped with a trinocular microscope, two 9K NEC video projectors, a Bose S1 Pro wireless audio system, and a solar-powered, lithium-ion battery system, providing an “off the grid” power source.

Special thanks for support and generous backing from 1708 Gallery sponsors, ArtsGreensboro, Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County, the North Carolina Arts Council, and the Dance Project 2022-23 Artists in Residence program.

Music Carolina: Summer Dances

  • Thursday, August 11, 2022
  • 7:30 PM 9:00 PM 19:30 21:00
  • Google Calendar ICS

Choreographers Elizabeth Clendinning, Janice Lancaster, and Monet Beatty return to SECCA for an evening of dance and music. More info here.

I’m porously directing a structured improvisation titled, The heels have ears. With dancers Kira Blazek Ziaii, Shelby Coon, Bekah Downing, Faith Fidgeon, Taryn Griggs, and Kendell Ramirez and musicians Matt Kendrick on bass, Kassem Williams on drums, Michael Kinchen on saxophone.

This structured improvisation announces itself as dancers and musicians contribute to its performance. The exchange explores how a listening response between musicians and dancers can render a sense of place that both utilizes and ruptures conventions of a proscenium space. The improvisatory structure puts the interdisciplinary question on a real-time display. Both dancers and musicians offer propositions and worlds — actual and imagined — as replies, findings, and losses are already in motion.

Special thanks to Christina Soriano and the WFU Interdisciplinary Arts Center for supporting this event. Additional support through the generous backing of ArtsGreensboro, Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County, the North Carolina Arts Council, and the Dance Project 2022-23 Artists in Residence program.

  • Sat, Feb 12, 2022 8:00 PM 20:00 Sat, Feb 26, 2022 8:00 PM 20:00

DIRTY LAUNDRY the film premieres Saturday, Feb. 12th at 8 pm. Virtual tickets go on sale on February 1. Ticket holders have 2 weeks after the premiere to view the film.

Featuring choreography from Stewart/Owen Dance and original writing from Gina Cornejo, this cringe-worthy, yet charming film brings together seven artists to enchant viewers from the comfort of their homes. Both an invitation to open dialogue and an offering of solidarity, DIRTY LAUNDRY passionately unearths gritty topics that are often buried. Note: This performance uses explicit language describing adult situations. Recommended for ages 16+.

UPDATE Due to unforeseen circumstances, our upcoming production of “Dirty Laundry” is pivoting away from live performances at the end of January. Instead we will take advantage of our residency at the Wortham to produce a film of the work and share it as a livestream event. Stay tuned for more details coming your way soon!

I’m so looking forward to a January in Asheville working with Stewart/Owen Dance for their next show. I love these artists. Have you seen their choreography for Sylvan Esso’s video Frequency?

Dirty Laundry is an immersive dance and spoken word performance premiering in the Tina McGuire Theatre at Wortham Center for the Performing Arts. Prepare to be engrossed in live dance, encircled by multimedia, and enthralled by provocative spoken word Gina Cornejo as she unapologetically discloses the irreverent unraveling of her marriage and divorce. This cringe-worthy-yet-charming show brings together seven artists to enchant viewers, featuring choreography from Stewart/Owen Dance, original writing and narration from @ginawilltravel, projected media by @half_state, lighting design by @_shwafish_, and dancing by @bellpeppered, @jonesymeg, @vanessa_owen, & @gavinstewart.

Tuesdays in October, join me for gallery talks through Reynolda's current exhibit, The Voyage of Life: Art, Allegory, and Community Response. We'll be sharing and engaging some of the choreographic approaches that can be sourced from this reflective collection:

  • Learn about my favorite dance podcast Dance & Stuff and discuss the moment wrestlers inspired photographer Collier Schorr to start dancing.

  • Make sense of the chaos in Lee Krasner’s Birth by moving with its curves and lines. See an example in Shen Wei's Rite of Spring.

  • Consider the likeness of George Bellow’s lithograph Tennis to the proscenium stage.

  • Look at how Kent Monkman’s performed responses to settler-European paintings reinsert absent bodies and reverse the gaze.

  • Get to know Keith Haring’s 'painting as performance' through his collaborations with choreographer Bill T. Jones. We’ll see a related example of how motion capture technology has influenced ways that the drawn line tracks movement.

I am feeling absolutely bioluminescent to announce this live performance …

Pairing up with the CoactionLab and Algae Society for FlowILM at the Cameron Museum in celebration of Earth Day! Aquatic organisms unique to the Cape Fear River and coastal ecosystems will be projection-mapped onto the museum's exterior walls and landscapes, interfacing with silhouettes, shadows, and movements of a lone dancer, connected through the medium of sound. Water samples and data from the museum's pond and the surrounding community will make the invisible visible through projected digital light and scales of magnification. Visitors are encouraged to meander the museum grounds and interact with the art, experiencing symbiotic worlds of biological and ecological art, biomimicry, interactive systems, and multi-sensory data translation. The event will also be accessible in an online virtual reality environment where audiences can meet inside a world inspired by algae, accessible through their smartphones or laptops. This outdoor event is presented free of charge. Social distancing and masks required. Rain dates will be Friday April 23rd or Saturday April 24th.
